What are the steps in IVF procedure?

Ovarian Stimulation:

This is the first step in IVF. It involves in stimulation of ovary with the help of injections for 8 - 10 days to improve the number of follicles growing as well as to keep the ovulation in control. Fertility medications are elected based on the female’s health condition. IVF can also be done without these medication which is otherwise called as natural cycle IVF.

IVF Cycle monitoring:

During these 8 - 10 days of injection a regular interval of scanning & blood tests are necessary to monitor the IVF cycle.

Egg retrieval (Egg Pickup):

Egg pickup is done after 32 - 36 hrs after taking HCG / Leuprolide injection and is done under IV sedation or short general anaesthesia by ultrasound guided aspiration of follicles.

The eggs are collected from the follicular fluid in the IVF lab.

Fertilisation off Egg:

IVF: IVF procedure is a procedure where collected egg and sperm are combined in a dish in lab where the fertilisation takes place naturally.

ICSI: This involves injecting of one sperm into one egg with the help of micro needle under a microscope. This procedure is done when there is an egg or sperm problem.

Embryo Transfer:

Embryo transfer is done after 2 - 5 days of egg retrieval. The fertilised egg (Embryo) is placed into the uterus with the help of a thin catheter. This is an OP procedure and no anaesthesia required. Some time embryo is frozen and transferred in the next cycle.

IVF Result:

Pregnancy test is done (BHCG) after 15 days of embryo transfer.

Embryo Freezing:

Extra embryos that are not transferred are frozen. Some time all the embryos are frozen and can be transferred in a later cycle.
